Bozeman ADU Gallery 250

A collection of 250 ADUs surrounding downtown Bozeman, Montana Summer 2024.

The neighborhoods surrounding downtown Bozeman exemplify quality craftsmanship, creativity, and history. I was inspired to document EVERY Accessary Dwelling Units (ADU) in this area (over 250 individual units) to spark some ideas and inspiration for builders. Think of this post as a Pinterest page focused on Bozeman ADU variety.

Bozeman’s take and resources on ADU’s:

AD what?

Accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, are self-contained living spaces. By definition, they sit on properties with a separate main, single-family home. Often referred to as in-law units, secondary suites, or mother-in-law suites, ADUs enjoyed their first popularity spike in the 1900s. These secondary spaces came in handy during the Great Depression and the housing crisis of 1929. ADUs began making a comeback in the 1980s as cities explored ways to support smaller and more affordable housing options within single-dwelling neighborhoods.

Geography covered

The image below outlines Bozeman’s 10 Historic Districts including Bon Ton, Brewery, Copper, Lindley Place, Main Street, MSU, North Tracy, Northern Pacific, South Tracy, and South Black district. The dashed outline is roughly our documentation route however we covered everything East of 8th Strett all the way North to the Fairgrounds.

Here are the routes we explored to gather our footage. We tracked over 30 miles (25 in which were in the alleys) using Strava, we divided this project into 6 clockwise categories based on direction starting from the Northwest, North Central, Northeast, Southeast, South Central, and the Southwest.

Time to dive into the gallery starting from the Northwest ending in the Southwest!

None of the above came close to cookie cutter design. Thanks for viewing this collection of ADU’s. If you are interested in plans for any particular design, reach out to daniel@blockbiome.com and will attempt to get in touch with the respective property owner/architect for a finders fee.
